Summer in Japan

A Summer Treat and a Gentle Cup of Tea

Summer in Japan brings many little joys—cool breezes under shrine trees, shared laughter with friends, and seasonal sweets that come and go like a breeze.

I recently visited Ise Jingū with a friend. But truth be told, my true destination was a bowl of Akafuku Goori—the famous summer-only shaved ice treat topped with soft mochi and sweet red bean paste. It’s something you can only enjoy in this season, and I was craving it.

This time, we decided to eat inside the shop. As we sat down, they served us not just the dessert, but a warm cup of tea—soft, mellow, and just right. Later, I learned this tea is specially blended to pair with Akafuku. It’s not just any tea—it’s chosen with care, meant to complete the experience.

That small gesture touched me. A reminder of Japan’s omotenashi spirit—where thoughtfulness is quietly woven into the everyday.

Back at home, I brought some Akafuku with me. Of course, the shop's tea isn’t with it anymore—but now, I get to play. I try it with my own tea, exploring little “marriages” of flavor. Sometimes it’s roasted hojicha. Sometimes it's a floral green. And sometimes it’s whatever I happen to have on hand.

That’s the joy, too—finding your own favorite combination. Tasting, sipping, and letting the moment be yours.
